Farm Safety
The start of spring means our local roads will be busy with farmers moving machinery to prepare for work in the fields.
The CKPS Traffic Management Unit would like to remind drivers to remain alert and patient when travelling on rural roadways where the possibility exists that they may encounter farm machinery:
– be extra cautious and reduce your speed, while also keeping your distance from these vehicles as they are slow moving and only travel up to 40 km/h, the extra distance you leave will increase your field of view.
– watch for turns, farm vehicles such as combines and tractors take wider turns at locations that are not well marked such as laneways to fields.
– drivers should only pass when it’s safe to do so and use caution as there may be another slow moving vehicle in front or oncoming
Farm equipment operators should also remember that lights are required on farm vehicles one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise. Loads that overhang 1.5 meters or more need a red flag or marker at the extreme rear of the load. Slow moving vehicle signs should not be faded or covered and the reflectivity should not be deteriorated. Operators must also signal intended turns by electronic or manual arm signals.
Please remember road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Share the roadway and be respectful to all road users.
