Canada Revenue Agency Fraud Advisory

In recent months a fraud which involves the Canada Revenue Agency and the Royal Mounted Police has been targeting Canadian Citizens all over the country. It begins with a pre-recorded phone message stating you owe the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) back taxes and that if you do not pay you will be arrested by the RCMP (Royal Mounted Police).

Once a caller returns the call of the ‘CRA Agent’ the fraudster will use threats of jail time and severe financial repercussions to demand payment. The fraudster will do you a favor by taking whatever you are able to pay immediately. Cases range from $100 to $12,000 and everywhere in between. The payment will be demanded in the form of Gift Cards (pre-paid iTunes cards, Ebay cards etc.) or Pre-Paid Visa cards. During this part of the fraud the fraudster will demand to be in constant contact under threat of ‘sending the police’.

Once the cards are purchased the fraudster will take the information from the cards and transfer the funds overseas via the internet. This money cannot be recovered once it is transferred. Perpetrators of this scam are often in foreign countries and out of reach of Police.

Remember to STOP and THINK when receiving odd phone calls; don’t let a fraudster scare the common sense out of you. Visit the below website for information on current scams and advice on how to be safe.
