Theft Leads to Multiple Charges CK17002724

On Monday, January 23, 2017 around 5:45 p.m. the woman attended UPI Gas Bar on Grand Avenue West in Chatham and received $5 worth of gas while the man was in the area. Ten minutes later, the woman returned and asked the clerk to check her oil. While the clerk was distracted, the man entered the store to look around. The pair left and returned a half an hour later with the man now wearing different clothing. The woman distracted the clerk again and this time, the man stole cigarettes and cash from the till. It was not until the clerk was able to return to the till, that he noticed the theft. Police were contacted and within a few hours the man and woman, along with their vehicle were identified.

Yesterday, the pair were arrested just before 4:00 p.m. at a local motel in Chatham. Search warrants were executed on their room and vehicle. As a result the cigarettes and cash from the UPI Gas Bar were located inside their motel room. Ammunition was found in the vehicle which contravened the man’s Prohibition Order. Hydromorphone was also found in the glove box.

A 30 year old Howard Township man was charged with property related offences, possession of ammunition and drug possession.

A 22 year old Harwich Township woman was also charged with property related offences and drug possession.

They were both released pending a future court date of February 14, 2017.
