Chatham-Kent Daily News Release – 20May2016

Update: Youths Charged with Break and Enter CK16014095

As previously released on May 17, 2016 around 10:00 p.m. police responded to an alarm at Victoria Park School on Murray Street. Upon police arrival, officers found that glass had been smashed out of a door with a brick and the fire alarm had been set off. Damage was estimated at $1000. Shortly after 11:30 p.m. police responded to an alarm at Taj Variety on King Street. Unknown suspect(s) broke a large window and electronic sign with a rock. Total damage was estimated at $2000.

Last night at 10:30 p.m. police responded to a similar incident again at Victoria Park School. Three youths were observed fleeing the area on foot. The two female youths were apprehended following a short foot chase through a nearby wooded area while the male youth got away.

The 14-year-old female youth from Chatham was charged with two counts of break and enter and one count of mischief under $5000. The 15-year-old female youth from Chatham was released unconditionally based on information obtained through investigation.

Shortly after midnight, police located the 13-year-old male youth from Chatham and he was taken into custody. He has been charged with two counts of break and enter and one count of mischief under $5000.

Both youths were released to their parents pending a court date of June 13, 2016.

Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE)

Last night, police conducted six (6) RIDE spot checks throughout the Municipality. Just over 500 vehicles were stopped and checked. Several roadside tests were administered. No charges were laid.

The Chatham-Kent Police Services reminds motorists that officers will be out in full force this holiday weekend. Please wear your seatbelt, obey the posted speed limit, put your phone away and don’t drink and drive.

Man Charged with Being Intoxicated in a Public Place CK16014115

Around 2:00 a.m. this morning, police responded to a residence on Grand Avenue East in Chatham in regards to a man who refused to pay his $25 cab fare. The 39-year-old Chatham man was arrested for transportation fraud, however through investigation the cab company did not want to pursue charges.

The intoxicated man was belligerent with the officers and did not have a place to go for the night. For his own safety, the man was transported to police headquarters. He was charged with being intoxicated in a public place and will be released when sober.

Break and Enter in Chatham CK16014029

Sometime this week, unknown suspect(s) entered a garage on Spencer Avenue and stole a $1200 power washer. The suspect(s) also spray painted the front of the residence causing approximately $500 damage.
