Protect Your Bicycle from Theft

With the warmer weather upon us comes an increase in people riding their bicycles. In an effort to help reduce the number of bicycle thefts throughout our community, the Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to offer the following crime prevention tips:

– Purchase a quality lock: the cost of a quality lock to secure your bike to a bike rack certainly outweighs the cost of replacing your bike or the emotional toll of being the victim of a crime.

– Lock it up – no matter where it’s parked: in public, lock your bike in a highly travelled area, so the thief can easily be seen. At home, ensure your bicycle is secured in a locked garage or shed.

– Do not leave your bicycle on display unattended when unlocked. Theft is a crime of opportunity which only takes seconds.

– Immediately upon purchasing your bicycle, make detailed notes of the make, model, colour and serial number. This is a proactive step that may help us reunite your bike to you if it’s recovered.
