The Chatham-Kent Police Service responded to 141 calls for service in the last 24 hours. Five people were arrested.
Man Charged with Break and Enter CK16016636
Last night at 7:00 p.m. police received information that a man, under the influence of an illegal substance, had just entered the fenced compound of Bell Canada on Centre Street and Harvey Street in Chatham.
Emergency personnel responded to the area and observed the man climbing the Bell tower. He climbed right to the top, which is approximately 300 feet up in the air and appeared to be trying to cause damage to the tower. With the assistance of a police negotiator, the man climbed down and was taken into custody just before 10:00 p.m.
The 52-year-old Chatham man has been charged with break and enter and mischief under $5000. Bell Canada will be inspecting the tower today to determine the amount of dollar damage the man caused last night.
Woman Charged with Obstruct Police CK16016648
Last night, while police were dealing with the Bell Tower incident mentioned above, the woman continuously crossed the yellow police tape, approached officers and yelled at the man up on the tower after specifically being asked not to interfere with police negotiations.
As the man climbed down and officers were in the process of apprehending him, the woman entered the perimeter again and walked right into the fenced compound.
The 32-year-old Chatham woman was arrested and charged with obstruct police. She was transported to police headquarters and eventually released pending a future court date of June 14, 2016.
Woman Arrested from CKPS Wanted List CK16016556
Yesterday morning around 10:15 a.m. police received information that the woman wanted for the offences of break and enter, theft under $5000, two counts of possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000 and two counts of failing to attend court was in an apartment on Baldoon Road in Chatham.
Officers attended the residence and the woman was taken into custody. The 35-year-old Chatham woman was transported to the court house pending a bail hearing.
Woman Charged with Being Intoxicated in a Public Place CK16016661
This morning around 2:50 a.m. police responded to the report of an intoxicated woman in the area of Mary Street in Chatham. Officers located the woman and for her own safety she was taken into custody.
The 20-year-old Chatham woman has been charged with being intoxicated in a public place. She will be released when sober.
Motor Vehicle Collision CK16016643
Just before 9:00 p.m. last night, police responded to a two vehicle collision on Park Avenue East near Queen Street in Chatham.
Minor injuries were reported. Total damage was estimated at $3000.
A 19-year-old Chatham woman was charged with making a left turn – failing to afford reasonable opportunity to avoid a collision.
