As the a kick off to next week’s Bullying Awareness Week in Ontario, students at Central Perth E.S. were looking to make difference at their school. They held a special event today showing others what it means to prevent bullying and treating each other with respect. The ‘Be a Verb’ students decided that they wanted to involve the entire school in raising awareness about what bullying is and how to stop it.
Acting on Bullying.
The committee, made up of 14 students, has met regularly to plan their school wide assembly. Dramatic skits showed off bullying situations and what to do if someone is a victim or bystander. The committee will also organize a ‘closing assembly’ at the end of the 5 week program, where the school will showcase their accomplishments and listen to guest speakers about bullying.
What is the Be a Verb program?
The Be a Verb Program is a school-wide bullying prevention program that supports AMDSB’s board-wide Be A Verb campaign. It was developed jointly by the Perth District Health Unit and AMDSB staff. A Public Health Nurse together with a school staff member organizes and runs this interactive program that involves the whole school. Students participate in educational bullying prevention activities with their classmates, while wearing bullying prevention T-shirts to spread the message. The goal is to empower students to take appropriate action when they see bullying happening in their schools, thereby making the school a safer, more accepting, and welcoming environment.
The week of November 17 -23 has been designated as Bullying Awareness Week. Avon Maitland school are focused on this work on an on-going basis and not just during the designated week. However, by using the Board’s Be A Verb” theme and website
