(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) On Saturday January 22, 2011, a Milverton resident contacted police advising that he had just received a call from a Bell Canada representative advising that he had won a free cell phone. The caller confirmed the name and address of the resident and during the conversation was able to obtain the date of birth and drivers licence number of the resident which the caller said he needed to confirm the resident’s identity. The caller advised that a cell phone would arrive in the mail within two days.
At the conclusion of the call the resident became suspicious and contacted police. It was confirmed with the telephone company that no promotions or contests were being run and that this was a scam.
The Perth County OPP is investigating this incident but they want to remind residents not to divulge personal information to unknown persons.
