Canada Day Long Weekend – 9 Fatal Crashes – 7,500 Charges

(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP deployed all available officers for the Canada Day Long Weekend Traffic Safety Initiative. As expected, Southern Bruce County experienced a dramatic increase in population and vehicle traffic during the long weekend.

Across the Province, OPP officers responded to 9 fatal crashes and laid more than 7,500 charges.

At the South Bruce Detachment officers laid 91 Highway Traffic Act charges including: speeding, racing, distracted driving and fail to wear seatbelt. In addition, 1 motorist was served with a 3 day “warn range” suspension for choosing to drive after drinking alcohol.

“Nine more families are now marking the death of a loved one on the Canada Day Long weekend. The South Bruce OPP is going to continue with traffic safety initiatives, that include both education and enforcement, in an effort to improve highway, trail and waterway safety for everyone,” South Bruce OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Bill Klym.
