(KINCARDINE, ON) – Building a Safe Community is about more than just crime prevention. A Safe Community is protecting people from all types of harm, i.e. injury prevention and victimization. Every year members of the South Bruce Detachment investigate occurrences where people are victimized, sometimes injured, as a result of criminal behaviour. Other investigations include those injured as a result of motor vehicle collisions and farm/ industrial accidents. Each injury has an impact on the individual, their families, the workplace and the broader community. Research and experience have shown that the vast majority of the injuries (and crime) are both predictable and preventable. Studies show who is at risk and who is not, and provide information on what works and what does not with respect to prevention.
A safe community is one that puts people and processes in place to ensure that a blend of strategic activities and community involvement will have a significant impact on the rate of its victimization and injuries wherever and however they occur. It is a community that has created the capacity to address its victimization and injury challenges in a thoughtful and practical way. Regardless of our role in the community we can make a difference we can make Kincardine a safer place to work, live and play.
The South Bruce OPP Detachment will be hosting a Kincardine Safe Community Committee. The purpose of this meeting will be to introduce the community to the concept of building safe communities to generate interest from a broad spectrum of the community. Other than working to establish this committee the police, as a community partner, will be taking a limited leadership role.
