In January, 2014 Waterloo Region and surrounding areas experienced a rash of residential break and enters related to funerals and obituary postings. Two females have been arrested in connection to the break and enters after a lengthy investigation by the Waterloo Regional Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch, with the assistance and co-operation of the Niagara Regional Police, Halton Regional Police, Woodstock Police Service, Brantford Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police. Laura ROCK , 26 years of Hamilton was arrested on the weekend and will appear in court Monday April, 28, 2014. A Warrant of Arrest for Michelle ELLIOTT , 45 years of Hamilton, has been issued for her role in the break and enters and she will be returned to Waterloo Region later this week to answer to the charges. She is currently in custody in Hamilton for a similar offence that occurred in April in Port Dover. The women are jointly charged with 11 counts of Break, Enter and Commit , five counts of Break and Enter with Intent, five counts of Possession of Stolen Property Under $5000 , as well as Possession of Break in Instruments and Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence. The women were using social media to obtain personal information about the victims and their families to break into residences while families were attending funerals and visitations. Items taken included laptops, electronics, jewellery and cash, totalling over $100,000. Investigators are continuing to recover sentimental items stolen during these incidents.
