On Tuesday September 2, 2014 at approximately 7:08 pm police responded to 176 Benton St in the city of Kitchener in regards to a report of a gas leak. KFD had cleared the gas from the house and had the meter was shut off. It was learned that both 176 and 180 Benton Street were abandoned houses. Further investigation revealed that the cause of the gas leak was in the basement where the gas line had been cut off at the source. All of the copper plumbing, gas line, and electrical had been stripped down and taken throughout the entire house leaving damage to walls and only cut off ends of wires left in the electrical boxes. This was also the case with 180 Benton Street. The damages were estimated at approximately 40,000 dollars per house. A total scrap copper value of an estimated 3500 dollars. There are no known suspects at this time however the investigation is continuing.
