September 28, 2016

On Tuesday, September 27, 2016 the Brantford Police Service teamed with the Brant County OPP in a one-day traffic safety initiative. The enforcement based initiative was designed to increase public compliance and awareness with safe driving measures and ultimately, save lives. Officers targeted areas in in the City of Brantford as well as Brant County.

As a result of the traffic enforcement, 34 tickets were issued, including 2 for not wearing a seatbelt, and 1 for a driver smoking with a person under 16 years in the vehicle.

The Brantford Police Service reminds drivers and passengers to consciously consider safety whenever they get into a vehicle or get behind the wheel. Pay attention to the road at all times and refrain from aggressive driving and distracted driving behavior.

Our goal is to change unsafe driver behaviour and improve safety for everyone. Fines and penalties act as an effective deterrent, but they are only one tool. Education and awareness encouraging safe driving behavior benefits everyone.

No one should lose their life or suffer serious injury because a driver was not devoting his or her full attention to the road.

Whenever you are driving, make sure you:

• obey the speed limit

• ensure all persons in the vehicle are wearing their seat belts

• don’t drink and drive

• don’t use hand held electronic devices while behind the wheel

• keep your eyes on the road.

• keep an extra watch for cyclists, pedestrians and motorcycles

Education, Awareness, and Enforcement is key to saving lives!

The Brantford Police Service Wishes to Educate the Public about Crimes of

Opportunity and How to Protect Themselves from Being a Victim

Over the last few days, the Brantford Police Service has investigated several thefts from motor vehicles and motor vehicle thefts. These are considered crimes of opportunity and the BPS offers the following tips to assist the public in protecting themselves from becoming a victim:

• Always remove the keys, roll up the windows and lock your vehicle when it’s unattended.

• Do not leave valuable items in your vehicle; however, if this is unavoidable, ensure valuables are concealed from plain view.

• Don’t leave personal identification, credit cards, vehicle registration or insurance slips in your vehicle.

• Park in well-lit areas – if you park in your driveway or carport, try to leave the outside lights on home throughout the night, or install a motion light.

• Do not leave a garage door opener in your vehicle – this may provide the suspect access into your home.

• Consider installing an alarm/anti-theft device on your vehicle.
