A 31 year old man is facing numerous charges after a disturbance Monday evening
On Monday May 11, 2015 at 8:01 p.m. BPS dispatch received a 9-1-1 emergency call from an address on Aberdeen Avenue. A woman was heard screaming and the woman’s phone was disconnected. Community Patrol Officers attended the home and learned that the accused, a friend of the victim’s had entered her home uninvited had assaulted her and held a gun to her head. The accused fled on foot prior to officers arriving.
The victim advised that she had been friends with the accused for several years and recently attempted to end the friendship as the woman was becoming concerned over some negative behavioral issues he was displaying towards her. Recently the accused had followed and threatened to damage property of the victim. On the evening of May 11, 2015 the accused entered the victim’s home uninvited. The accused became agitated with the victim questioning her regarding her recent whereabouts. The accused pushed the victim onto a couch, pulled a handgun from his backpack and pointed it at the victim’s forehead, the barrel placed up against the woman’s skin. The accused continued to question the victim and threaten to assault her. At one point the accused got up and walked into another room. The victim ran to her bedroom and the accused followed grabbing a cellular telephone away from the victim and breaking it against a cabinet. A visitor had attended her residence at this time not knowing a disturbance was on going. The accused subsequently fled the home on foot.
Community Patrol Officers in search of the accused located him walking in the area of the Lorne Bridge. The accused ran from the Officer towards a walking trail behind the Civic Centre. The Officer gave chase on foot and observed the accused discard a backpack into a bush area while chasing the accused. The Officer continued to yell commands for the accused to stop and the accused ended the pursuit in the lot of the Civic Centre. At 8:17 p.m. the accused was arrested and was transported to the BPS.
The accused was also on conditions of prohibited firearms for a conviction of two counts of Robbery and Unlawfully in a Dwelling.
A search of the area was conducted by Officers including the assistance of BPS K9. The discarded backpack was found in a bush area. The firearm was not located on the backpack or on the accused. A search continued in the area of the Civic Centre during the inclement weather and darkness however the firearm was not located. The search has continued this morning.
Search teams consisting of trained Emergency Response Teams, Community Patrol Officers and BPS Auxiliary Officers are conducting an organized ground search to locate the discarded firearm.
It is not known if the weapon is an imitation or genuine firearm. As with any investigation regarding firearms we treat the threat as genuine and real until proven otherwise.
The firearm is described as being a black handgun with a wide barrel.
The Brantford Police Service is notifying the Community that there is an outstanding firearm related to this investigation that has yet to be recovered. The accused had the opportunity to discard the firearm anywhere between Aberdeen Avenue and the Civic Centre. We do know that the accused left the area of Aberdeen shortly after 8:01 p.m. and was arrested approximately 16 minutes later on the parking lot at the Civic Centre.
The BPS is asking residents in between these two locations to help us by conducting their own search of their property. The firearm may have been concealed in someone’s garden, in a trailer parked on a random driveway or tossed recklessly and is in plain view in a backyard.
If you observe the handgun DONOT touch the weapon and call the police immediately.
The accused a 31 yr old Brantford man is charged with the following offences;
Breach Probation Order contrary to section 733.1(1)
Unlawfully in a Dwelling House contrary to section 348(1)
Possess Weapons Dangerous contrary to section 88(1)
Criminal Harassment contrary to section 264(12)(b)
Utter Threats contrary to section 264.1(1)(b)
Assault contrary to section 266
