Date: June 2, 2015

Incident: On June 2, 2015 a Brantford man attended the front desk at the Brantford Police Service and turned in a stolen cellular telephone. The man advised that he recently attended an address in Hamilton to purchase a used IPhone 5C cellular telephone after answering an online advertisement. The man reports that when he returned home and went to activate the cellular phone, he was notified by the phone that it was stolen and he was to turn the phone into police. The man did so and turned in the telephone to the BPS.

The investigation continues, it is unknown at this time if the person who sold the stolen phone was even aware that the property being sold was stolen.

What can you do to protect yourself when purchasing a used cellular telephone?

Most times that a wireless device is reported to the service provider as lost or stolen, the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity – a 15-17 digit code that identifies a mobile phone) is shared in a National data bank.

Anyone can check the status of a device in Canada instantly through the following website; http://www.protectyourdata.ca/check-the-status-of-your-device-in-canada/

The IMEI number can be found underneath the battery of your cell phone. If the IMEI # is scratched off on the phone you can simply press *#06# in the dial pad window on the electronic device you wish to purchase and the IMEI will be displayed. Before any transaction of money is made protect yourself and

Protecting your Property

The BPS would like to remind the community that with warmer temperatures comes the

increased responsibility of ensuring your valuables are protected.

Warmer weather usually has us bringing out valuables such as lawn furniture, garden

decorations and bicycles. Etching a mark or initial on your property is easy for one to

identify. This is also a time when we leave doors and windows open and unlocked.
