Brantford Crime Briefs – August 12, 2015

Type: Fraud Alert – Canadian Revenue Agency Scam

Date: August 11, 2015

Location: Brantford

Incident: On August 11th, 2015 the Brantford Police Service received several complaints regarding attempt Frauds. Fortunately these citizens did not fall prey to the high pressured and aggressive language and tone used by the fraudsters. No personal information was disclosed and no money was transferred as wanted by the fraudsters.

How to protect yourself

Do not take immediate action.

Verify that what you are being told is the truth.

Ask yourself why the CRA would be asking for personal information over the phone or e-mail that they likely already have on file.

Contact the CRA or your accountant to confirm that you in fact owe back taxes, or are entitled to a refund, before providing any personal or banking information.

The CRA is aware of these scams and wish to remind Canadians that they will only send payments by direct deposit or by cheque,

Type: Break and Enter

Date: August 11, 2015

Location: Grand Street

Incident: On August 11th, 2015 sometime during the day a front window was entered and entry gained into a home on Grand Street. An IPod was reported stolen.

Type: Break and Enter – Garage

Date: August 11, 2015

Location: Eagle Avenue

Incident: On August 11th, 2015 sometime in the afternoon a detached garage was entered at a home on Eagle Avenue. The door on the garage was kicked off its tracks. Empty beer cans and a battery operated trimmer was amongst the items reported stolen.

Type: Speed Enforcement

Date: August 12, 2015

Location: Henry Street and Wayne Gretzky Parkway

Incident: On August 12th, 2015 at around 6:30 a.m. a Community Patrol Officer was monitoring traffic speeds during morning hour travel. The Officer observed a vehicle turn east bound onto Henry Street from Wayne Gretzky Parkway. The vehicle appeared to be driving at a high rate of speed and the officer observed the suspect car overtaking other vehicles in the slow/curb lane. The officer who was conducting radar observed that the vehicle was travelling 114 in a posted 60 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted with the vehicle on Henry Street. The driver a 26 year old Brantford man advised that he was on his way into work. The driver was charged with Stunt Driving under the Highway Traffic Act and Fail to Produce Proof of Insurance contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. The accused had previous convictions for speeding and two past driving suspensions as a result of convictions.

The accused was issued a mandatory 7 day drivers licence suspension as well as the vehicle being driven was impounded under the mandatory impound program.

Speeding kills, it is a dangerous and unlawful activity which puts many innocent people

at risk. Remember, driving is a privilege not a right.

The BPS requests citizens to report all crimes and suspicious activities which take

place on your property. All thefts from your motor vehicles should be reported to

the BPS regardless if items are stolen.
