Brantford Crime Briefs – 14Jan2016

Type: Break and Enter (Residential)

Incident: 1508-16

Location: Hawthorne Lane

Details: Sometime overnight on January 12, 2016 an unlocked garage door was entered. A Remington snow blower and power tools were reported stolen.

Type: Intoxicated Man

Incident: 1515-16

Location: Darling Street at Market Street

Details: On January 13, 2016 shortly before 2:00 p.m. A BEAT Officer observed a man standing in the middle of Darling Street near Market Street obstructing traffic.

The Officer approached the man who was extremely intoxicated by alcohol and staggering in the middle of the road. The man was arrested for intoxicated in a public place and transported to the police station. The Brantford man, a 57 year old was held in custody until he was sober.

Type: Theft from Motor Vehicle

Incident: 1535-16

Location: Pontiac Street

Details: On Wednesday January 13, 2016 at around 5:00 p.m. a man reported a theft from his truck sometime overnight. The owner of the truck reported that shortly before 4:30 a.m. he discovered that his GMC Yukon had been entered while parked in a lot on Pontiac Street. Reported stolen from the SUV was a 12 gauge Remington shot gun. The owner reported that he accidentally left the shotgun under the back seat of his vehicle. The owner reported that the shotgun was unloaded and had a trigger lock secured on it.

Investigation also continues regarding the possession and transportation of the shotgun under the Firearms Act.

A shotgun can be lethal in the hands of someone not educated on firearms safety; this is a public safety concern.

Type: Break and Enter (Commercial)

Incident: 1573-16

Location: St Paul Ave – ALDO Motors

Details: On Thursday January 14, 2016 shortly after 12:30 a.m. a male broke a small window at ALDO Motors on St Paul Avenue. An audible alarm was triggered which alerted staff in the emergency unit at the Brantford General Hospital. The suspect was observed fleeing the business on foot carrying some sort of black object. Officers attended and followed the suspect foot prints in the snow. The suspect had travelled west on Terrace Hill St and jumped over a fence in the rear yard at an address on Lyons Avenue. Officers recovered two car batteries stolen from the business beside the fence. The footprints lead to Lyons Avenue where it is believed that the suspect jumped into a vehicle and fled the area. Officers then followed the tire tracks which were followed to the area of Paris Road.

Investigation continues.

Type: Prowler

Incident: 1582-16

Location: Victoria Street

Details: On Thursday January 14, 2016 shortly after 4:30 a.m. a concerned homeowner telephoned the police to report a prowler. A set of fresh footprints were observed in the snow around the rear and side of the home owner’s residence. Officers attended and tracked the footprints which lead up the driveway of every home on the north side of Victoria Street, between Park Av and Peel Street. It appeared that the unknown suspect was targeting vehicles. At the time of the investigation it did not appear as any of the vehicles were entered.

The BPS requests citizens to report all crimes and suspicious activities which take place on your property. All entries from your motor vehicles should be reported to the BPS regardless if items are stolen.

The BPS reminds everyone to always secure your home, whether you are inside or not. An unlocked door is a potential crime of opportunity.

Type: Break and Enter (Commercial)

Incident: 1585-16

Location: Charing Cross Street – Creative Outlooks Custom Upholstery

Details: On Thursday January 14, 2016 at around 5:45 a.m. a break and enter was discovered at a business on Charing Cross Street. A front glass window had been smashed out in order to gain entry. No items were reported stolen at the time of the break and enter.
