Type: Fraud

Incident # 16-35696

Date: December 9, 2016

Location: Dalhousie Street (100 Block)

Incident: On Saturday, September 22, 2016 a man attended a financial institution on Dalhousie Street and cashed a cheque that had not been issued to him. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and through investigation, the man was identified. On Friday, December 9, 2016 the man was located by police and arrested.

As a result, a 42 year-old Brantford man was charged with Fraud, Utter Forged Document, and Disobeying a Court Order. He was held for a bail hearing.

Incident # 16-46401

Date: December 9, 2016

Incident: On Friday, December 9, 2016 a woman contacted the Brantford Police Service to report being a victim of a mystery shopper scam. The woman reported that she had been contacted online in regards to a secret shopper employment opportunity. The company sent her two cheques which she deposited into her bank account. Shortly after depositing the cheques, her bank notified her that the cheques were fraudulent.

Typically, the scam involves the mystery shopper receiving a cheque for a large sum of money. The mystery shopper deposits the cheque and is instructed to send the majority of the money back through companies such as Western Union. The remainder of the money is to be kept as the salary.

Type: Theft

Incident # 16-46427

Date: December 11, 2016

Location: Colborne Street (600 Block)

Incident: On Friday, December 9, 2016 at approximately 6:30 p.m. a male youth attended a store on Colborne Street and selected an item off of the shelf and concealed it inside his jacket. The youth then left the store without making any attempt to pay for the item. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and through investigation, the youth was identified. On Sunday, December 11, 2016 at approximately 5:00 p.m. police located the youth and arrested him.

As a result, a 15 year-old Brantford man was charged with Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, and Failing to Comply with a Youth Sentence. He was held for a bail hearing.

Incident # 16-46445

Date: December 9, 2016

Location: Market Street South (0-100 Block)

Incident: On Friday, December 9, 2016 at approximately 10 p.m. a man attended a store on Market Street South and filled a bag with various items off of the shelves. The man then fled the store without making any attempt to pay for the items. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and located the man a short distance from the store. The man engaged police in a brief foot pursuit before he was arrested. After his arrest, he initially provided a false name. Through investigation, police were able to learn his true identity. It was also learned that the man had three outstanding warrants for his arrest for theft related incidents.

As a result, a 21 year-old Brantford man was arrested and charged with Theft, Obstruct Police, and Breach of Probation. He was held for a bail hearing.
