Brantford Crime Briefs – 11Oct2016

Type: CRA Fraud

Incident # 16-37528

Date: October 7, 2016

Incident: On Friday, October 7, 2016 a man contacted Police to report being the victim of a scam. The victim advised that on September 27, 2016 he received a call from a man claiming to be a representative of the Canada Revenue Agency and that the he had an outstanding balance on his taxes. The victim was directed to withdraw money from his bank account and meet the man at the intersection of Darling Street and Queen Street. The victim met with two men at the arranged location and handed one of the men the money. They then left the area. The victim spoke to family members about the transaction who advised that it was a scam. The men were described as driving a newer black car with tinted windows. The man who received the money was described as having dark skin with short black hair and wearing nice clothing. The driver was described as dark skinned with black hair and wearing a jacket.

If you receive a call saying you own money to the CRA, you can contact the CRA to verify.

The CRA will never do the following:

• Send an email with a link and ask you to divulge personal or financial information

• Ask for personal information of any kind by email or text message

• Request payments by prepaid credit cards

• Leave personal information on an answering machine

• Meet with you in a public location to receive money

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BEING A VICTIM:

• Never send personal and/or financial information over an unsecured email

• Never give out personal information/credit card information to an unknown source over the telephone and/or unsecured email

• You can stop a telephone scam by hanging up

• When contacted about your personal accounts never click on a web link attached to the email to ‘verify’ or confirm’

• Confirm with family members or your bank before transferring any funds

• Educate yourself by visiting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website at www.antifraudcentre.ca

If you have already sent funds and/or your personal information contact the police and your financial institution immediately. If you believe that you have been a VICTIM OF FRAUD and reside in the City of Brantford, contact the Brantford Police Service at 519-756-7050.

Type: Motor Vehicle Collision/Possession of Stolen Property

Incident # 16-37751

Date: October 7, 2016

Location: Fifth Avenue (100 Block)

Incident: On Friday, October 7, 2016 at approximately 4:30 p.m. a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck was in a collision with another motor vehicle at the intersection of Division Street and Ninth Avenue. Upon colliding with the other vehicle, the pick-up truck skidded a distance before striking a house. The two male occupants of the truck fled the area. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and they were located a short distance away and arrested. Through investigation it was learned that the truck had been reported stolen.

As a result, a 17 year-old Brantford man is charged with Possession of Stolen Property and Failing to Comply with Recognizance. Dakota Steven DAVIS, 20 years of Fifth Avenue in Brantford is charged with Possession of Stolen Property. Both were held for a bail hearing.

Incident # 16-37861

Date: October 8, 2016

Incident: On Friday, October 8, 2016 a man entered a motor vehicle that was parked

on Oakhill Drive and stole a wallet. The man then attended three different locations and fraudulently used a stolen credit card to make 6 different purchases. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and investigated. On Sunday, October 10, 2016 Police attended a motel in Brantford in attempt to locate the man. As an officer was knocking on the door to the motel room, a second officer observed the man climbing out of a rear window in an attempt to evade police. The man was arrested. During a search after his arrest, he was found to be in possession of controlled substances.

As a result, Steven Carl BEACH, 45 years of Colborne Street in Brantford was charged with Fraud x’s 6, Theft Under, Possession of Stolen Property, and Possession of a Controlled Substance x’s 3. He was held for a bail hearing.

Type: Impaired Driver

Incident # 16-37907

Date: October 8, 2016

Location: William Street at Henrietta Street

Incident: On Saturday, October 8, 2016 at approximately 5:00 p.m. a man was operating a scooter on Henrietta Street and did not stop for a stop sign at William Street. The scooter was then struck by another vehicle. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and investigated. While speaking with the man operating the scooter, he displayed signs of impairment. The man was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. While at the hospital, the accused provided samples of his breath as required by law. The results were 108 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and 86 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The accused, a 31 year-old Brantford man was subsequently charged with Over 80 mg and released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date. The scooter was impounded for a mandatory seven day seizure.

Incident # 16-37920

Date: October 8, 2016

Location: Dalhousie Street (200 Block)

Incident: On Saturday, October 8, 2016 at approximately 7:00 p.m. a man attended a financial institution on Dalhousie Street and attempted to cash a cheque that had not been issued to him. Employees contacted Community Patrol Officers to investigate. Upon police arriving at the institution, the man fled from the area. After a short foot pursuit the man was arrested.

As a result, William Andrew WILSON, 57 years of West Street in Brantford was charged with Attempt Fraud, Utter Forged Documents, Possession of Stolen Property, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date.

Type: Family Dispute

Incident # 16-38096

Date: October 10, 2016

Incident: On Monday, October 10, 2016 at approximately 10:30 a.m., Community Patrol Officers received a call from a mother reporting that her son was intoxicated and causing a disturbance in their home. Police investigated and learned that the man and his mother engaged in a verbal argument. The argument escalated and the man damaged a closet door, punched holes in walls, and threatened to kill his mother.

As a result, a 20 year-old Brantford man was arrested and charged with Mischief and Uttering Threats. He was held for a bail hearing.

Incident # 16-38127

Date: October 10, 2016

Location: Clarence Street (200 Block)

Incident: On Monday, October 10, 2016 at approximately 3:30 p.m. two male youths attended a business on Clarence Street and set fire to some debris that was at the side of the building. The fire spread to a fence and caused some damage. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and provided descriptions of the suspects. The youths were located a short distance away and arrested.

As a result, a two 16 year-old Brantford men were arrested and charged with Arson and Mischief. They were held for a bail hearing.

Type: Neighbour Dispute

Incident # 16-38141

Date: October 10, 2016

Incident: On Monday, October 10, 2016 at approximately 6:15 p.m. a woman confronted her neighbours’ children about climbing over a fence. The children advised their mother who then spoke with the woman. The two women began arguing with one another. The argument escalated and the first woman pushed the other, grabbed her by the sweater and punched her in the face three times. The second woman threw the first to the ground and punched and kicked her. Multiple neighbours observed the fight and tried to separate the women. At this point, a man who was a friend of the first woman attended the area with an axe and a large dog and threatened to kill everyone. Community Patrol Officers were contacted and investigated.

As a result a 22 year-old woman was arrested and charged with Assault. She was released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date. A 35 year-old Brantford woman was arrested and charged with Assault. She was released on a Promise to Appear for a future court date. A 22 year-old Brantford man was arrested and charged with Possession of a Weapon and Uttering Threats. He was held for a bail hearing.
