Type: Person in Crisis – Medical Emergency

Incident #: 17- 8042

On March 6, 2017 at approximately 4:18 a.m. an elderly woman dialed 911 emergencies to report that her adult son was despondent sitting in his vehicle which was parked in a residential garage with all doors and windows locked. Officers arrived and heard a vehicle running inside the garage and detected a strong smell of exhaust fumes coming from the garage door area. The officers felt concerned for the man’s safety and forced a rear garage door open. The inside of the garage was filled with thick exhaust fumes and the male was observed sitting in the driver’s seat. The officers felt it was too dangerous to enter the garage due to the buildup of exhaust and carbon monoxide. One officer yelled at the male sitting in the vehicle and was able to get his attention. The male exited the vehicle and began to walk to the rear of the vehicle. The male was overcome by fumes and began to lose consciousness, leaning over the vehicle. Due to fears that the man’s life was in critical danger, two Brantford Police officers entered into the garage in an attempt to carry the man out to safety. The two officers were overcome by fumes during this attempted rescue and had to exit the garage. Officers smashed a garage window in order to draw out more of the exhaust and bring fresh air to circulate in the garage. The officers kept in communication with the man and instructed him to unlock the front garage door. Officers were then able to enter the front garage door and assisted leading the man to the front lawn area. The man who was in crisis was taken to hospital for treatment and is expected to recover. Two BPS officers were also taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation/carbon monoxide poisoning. The officers were released after treatment. The bravery and tenacity that these officers displayed are being credited with saving the life of a man who was in medical distress.
