The Positive Power of Social Media
On January 5, 2016 the BPS released a ‘Community Awareness’ media release (see below) confirming that ‘the Brantford Police Service has not received reports of homeowners randomly targeted by masked men knocking on their door and forcing their way into homes’.
We took the opportunity to update and inform the community that we have not received reports of home invasions.
As a direct result of the awareness media release a home owner contacted the Brantford Police Service. The woman reported that she experienced an incident a few days before Christmas involving persons ringing her door bell in the early morning hours, however had not yet reported the incident to police.
The home owner reported that on December 23rd or 24th, 2015 at around 4:15 a.m. two persons dressed in dark clothing wearing ski masks rang the doorbell three separate times at an address on Barrett Avenue. The home owner did not answer the door thinking it was kids playing a prank.
This incident is similar to messages which have circulated on social media sites, with the exception that men had forced their way into the home.
The Brantford Police Service receives calls from home owners regarding suspicious persons trespassing around property, around their vehicles in the middle of the night, some having their door bells rung. There are home owners who have surveillance video operating which monitors their property and these homeowners do contact us when suspicious persons are seen lurking around their property.
What we don’t know; the intentions of the individuals ringing the doorbell at the home. What we don’t know; was it a dare or prank and we do not have information at this time to suggest that those individuals were going to break in and steal from the home owners.
The Brantford Police Service encourages the community to report all suspicious activities which take place on your property; error on the side of caution and call the police right away.
We monitor and investigate these incidents. When a suspicious person’s call is received our service is able to forward the information and description of possible suspect(s) to other officers, our Street Crimes Unit and Crime Analyst. This coordinated response allows us to identify priorities for enforcement activities and solve crime in partnership with our community.
