The Avon Maitland District School Board approved the tender submission for the construction of the new Maitland River Elementary School. The Board awarded the construction contract to Devlan Construction of Guelph in the amount of $10,158,700. The new school, to be built to the east of F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, will feature 24 classrooms including 4 kindergarten spaces, I flexible kindergarten/oversize classroom, 15 regular classrooms,3 special education classrooms, 1 multi-purpose room/classroom, and a library. It will also house a regular volleyball size gymnasium with storage, a servery, barrier-free washroom, change rooms, 2 sets of girls and boys washrooms and much more.
It was noted that the total cost of the new school project is almost $12 million. Superintendent of Business Janet Baird Jackson told the Board that the $1.8 million shortfall will be covered by funds from the surplus property reserve and the Board’s Capital Funding reserve.
Superintendent Baird-Jackson told the Board that construction of the new school will begin April 2, 2012.
