Years ago Council and Town Staff convinced the Public that keeping
our local municipal police force was going to be far cheaper than
OPP. This has obviously turned out to be untrue, and staff
have admitted this. Wingham Policing cost a massive 2X that of
OPP, an incredible burden to Winghamites.
Note: We have to call in the OPP for K-9, drug busts, backup, search
and rescue, helicopter and any semi-serious crime.
Council and the Old Boy’s Club seem set on expanding the Wingham
Police to Blyth and East-Wawanosh.
Now our entire Municipality is dragged into the debate of Wingham
Policing costs. Blyth and East-Wawanosh residents will have to
speak out, or they will be railroaded into getting rid of the OPP
and switching to the grotesquely expensive Wingham Police, further
expanding Town Staff. Currently it takes at least 7 Wingham
Police to service the .99 square mile of Wingham. 7 cops per
square mile.
At last night’s council meeting, council discussed expanding the
Wingham Police Service to cover all of North Huron, and seemed to be
under the impression our neighboring municipalities were interested
in getting rid of the cost effective OPP and using a less equipped
North Huron Police Service”. It seems these lofty assertions
were complete BS.
Councillor Brock Vodden spoke out and stated that he was pleased
with the OPP service in Blyth
