Bicycle Safety Reminder

(KINCARDINE, ON.) – Bicycle enthusiasts have been out taking advantage of the nice weather and the South Bruce OPP would like to remind riders and parents about bicycle safety. A bicycle rider is required to obey rules of the road including stopping at stop signs, using a sound signalling device (such as a horn) and having a light on after dark. Equally as important is the requirement to wear a bike helmet when riding. Although the law only requires the use of a bike helmet under the age of 18, a properly fit bike helmet is recommended to enhance the safety of all riders.

Safe Kids Canada advises a properly fit bike helmet decreases the risk of serious head injury by as much as 85%. The Bike Helmet Research Foundation notes a significant reduction in the number of child cyclists admitted to hospital with a head injury since helmet use became law.

The South Bruce OPP members have already been out warning riders about bike helmets. The set fine for riding without a helmet under 18 years of age is $75.00.

“Always be aware of vehicles, obey the rules of the road and definitely wear your bike helmet, that’s a ‘no-brainer’”.
