(ARRAN ELDERSLIE TWP, ON) – On September 22nd, 2011 at 8:02 pm, a South Bruce OPP officer on patrol along Yonge Street North in Tara noticed a youth riding a bicycle with no bike helmet and no light on the bike. The youth was escorted home where his father was charged with Permit person under 16 years to ride – no helmet. The South Bruce OPP is reminding parents and caregivers that Safe Kids Canada advises a properly fit bike helmet decreases the risk of serious head injury by as much as 85%. Riders under 18 years old have been required to wear a bike helmet since October 1st, 1995. The fine for riding without a helmet under 18 years is $75. The risk of serious injury is much greater if the youth falls off their bike and lands on an unprotected head.
