Bear Sighting In City

Shortly after 1:00pm (June 21) the Owen Sound Police Service was called to attend the 3500 block of East Bayshore Rd by a citizen who had a large bear on his residential property. Officers attended and observed the bear moving between properties seemingly unafraid of local residents and police. The bear was last seen heading east bound into the bush area. It was later learned that there were actually two bears in the area.

Police canvassed residents in the area to make them aware of the sighting and encourage bear proofing of their properties.

Some things residents can do to assist in bear proofing their properties are:

Store garbage inside their house/garage or in a garbage receptacle with a tight fitting lid.

Do not put your garbage out at night, wait until the morning of the pickup.

Do not hang bird feeders.

Pet food should not be left out side.

Clean your BBQ after use including the grease trap.

Bear sightings are not uncommon in Owen Sound and residents should not be alarmed. However practices like not feeding the bears or attempting to get close to view or take pictures are common sense.

Call the Owen Sound Police should you observe a bear within the city limits.
