Occurrence Type: Theft of Jewelry Leads Back to Granddaughter

On Saturday, September 17th, 2016 at 9:00am Police attended a residence on Moore Place, in the City of Barrie, in regards to a theft that had occurred the evening before.
Upon arrival Police spoke with an elderly women who advised that someone had broken into her safe and taken all of her jewelry. The victim believed it was her granddaughter as the suspect had knowledge of where the key was. She reported they had also had similar incidents with small thefts around the house, none of which had been previously reported to police. The suspect, along with a few friends were observed at the house the evening before which is when the theft was suspected to have occurred.
Upon further investigation, with her conscious weighing on her and the presence of the police, the granddaughter returned to the residence with a quantity of the stolen jewelry. She then led police to retrieving the other discarded items in a wooded area near by. The total value of the jewelry was estimated to be over $12,000 dollars, all of which was recovered and returned to the victim.
The 21-year-old Barrie female was charged with Theft Over $5000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 and Failing to Comply with Probation from a previous assault charge from 2015. The female was released with a court date in December and placed on strict conditions not to communicate with those involved or attend her grandmother’s residence.
