Current Scams!

Barrie Police Investigators had been made aware of and are investigating two different types of scams that have resurfaced.

Grandparent Scam:

An elderly female received a call from an unknown male, believed to be based in the United States requesting that she lend him approximately $1500.00 dollars. The male on the phone told the elderly female that he was her grandson and he was needing her to give him $1500.00 dollars as he was in some sort of trouble. The female stated that she had no way of getting $1500.00 dollars to him.

The unknown caller told the elderly female to go to the nearest convenience store and purchase $1500.00 dollars worth of Visa Vouchers. He called her back a short time after requesting the numbers on the card. She provided them to her which gave the male access to the $1500.00 dollars.

Police are warning anyone that if a call is received from ANYONE requesting money, hang up. Family members will talk to you in person!

Fake Gift/Voucher Cards:

The Barrie Police Service would like to alert the public to an ongoing investigation regarding fraudulent Gift/voucher cards that are popping up in throughout the city.

These gift cards, supplied to stores in bundles, are invalid(Fraudulent) and the potential victim purchasing the card at a is subsequently defrauded out that amount of money.
