Back To School

(Ottawa) – Welcome back to college and university students! As students prepare for another year of studies, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) will be working with City, university and community partners to help ensure everyone has a safe and law abiding return to school.

Through education and enforcement, returning students will be reminded about being respectful neighbours, safe and legal behaviours, bike safety and the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. This is the third year OPS has conducted this project.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy their neighbourhoods in a safe manner,” said Const. Ryan Pierce of the Rockliffe Community Police Center. “It is important for people to understand that nuisance crimes and bylaw violations affect the quality of life for residents and won’t be tolerated.”

The efforts will include increased police presence around campuses across the City, education visits by volunteers and City partners and enforcement. It will also include other partners like the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

The targeted areas are often the source of a large number of complaints to police and By-Law Services regarding disturbances, noise, public intoxication, drug use, and other nuisance issues. The campaign aims to educate residents before any enforcement efforts begin. The teams will be visiting areas with high student populations bringing them information about City By-Laws and property standards.
