(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Monday March 26, 2012, six Atwood residents contacted the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reporting the theft of belongings from unlocked vehicles.
Police investigation revealed that the six vehicles were entered sometime between Sunday evening March 25 and Monday morning March 26, 2012. The vehicles did not appear to have sustained damage but the many small items taken add up to a significant amount of money.
– From a residence on Wood View Drive a laptop computer and a bag were removed (the computer was later located behind a neighbour’s vehicle).
– A Fisher Avenue resident reported that his SUV was entered and a small amount of change was stolen from the centre console.
– Another Fisher Avenue resident advised that a GPS unit and a Nintendo game were taken from the vehicle.
– A vehicle on Queen Street was reported entered but nothing appears to be missing.
– A Parkview Crescent vehicle had a Garmin NUVI 50LM GPS unit (#2D6305004) removed from the dash and numerous small items taken from inside the vehicle.
– A second Queen Street resident contacted police and reported the theft of a Tom-Tom GPS unit from their vehicle.
Shortly after 5 a.m. on Monday March 26, 2012 another resident of Queen Street East in Atwood reported that his grey 2010 Toyota Tundra pickup truck was stolen from his driveway. The truck had been unlocked and the keys were left inside. This theft occurred sometime between 9:30 p.m. Sunday March 25, 2012 and 5 a.m. Monday March 26, 2012.
At 10:20 a.m. on Monday March 26, 2012 the Toyota Tundra was located behind the Atwood Presbyterian Church on Monument Road, three blocks away from where it was stolen. The vehicle was found undamaged, unlocked and the keys were still inside.
Sergeant Steph Pilon of the North Perth OPP said “these crimes are very opportunistic and completely preventable. Simple precautions by the general public go a long way in reducing these offences. How much time does it take to lock the doors and pocket the keys when you park your vehicle?â€
