(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – In the light of some recent reports of break ins, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is offering residents the following tips to help protect their property:
A solid door with a quality lock set is difficult to break through. For added security, consider installing a dead bolt locking system as well.
Place a secondary block (ex. piece of an old broom handle) in the window/sliding glass door track. If the latch is defeated, the window/door can’t be forced open. Consider installing pins to prevent the window being lifted out of the track.
Exterior lighting that provides good visibility will deter a potential thief.
Place stickers near outside windows and doors: ex. “beware of dogâ€Â, “neighbourhood watch†or “protected by alarm systemâ€Â.
Pay attention to suspicious vehicles or people in your neighbourhood.
Photograph your valuables, record the serial number and consider engraving a unique identifier. Positively identifying your property will help police hold a thief accountable.
Always lock your vehicle when it’s left unoccupied.
If leaving valuables in a parked vehicle make sure they aren’t left in plain sight.
