(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) – On Friday August 14, 2015, shortly before 11 p.m., an Elizabeth St. E. resident in Listowel reported the theft of his Nissan sedan.
The unlocked car with the keys left inside, had been parked in its parking space when the owner heard someone start it up and drive it away. The car contained personal documentation as well as specialty tools.
The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) sent out immediate alerts, and patrols were made for the vehicle.
At approximately 4:15 a.m. on Saturday August 15, 2015, Perth County OPP officers observed the stolen Nissan travelling northbound on Argyle St. N near Binning Ave. W. The officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested the lone male occupant.
The officers determined that the licence plates on the stolen vehicle had been removed and were replaced with other stolen licence plates. The male was also found to be in possession of a prohibited weapon.
The 15 year old male youth, a resident of the Municipality of North Perth has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:
– Theft under $5,000 of a motor vehicle
– Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 x2
– Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon
The youth was released on a “Promise to Appear” requiring him to attend at the Ontario Court of Justice (youth division) in Listowel on September 30, 2015 where he is to answer to these charges.
Residents are urged to lock their vehicles and pocket the keys so as to avoid these crimes of opportunity.
