Apartment fire at 7 Christopher Court

GUELPH, ON, July 22, 2016 – Earlier last evening, at approximately 7:25pm, multiple calls were received reporting a fire on the fourth floor at 7 Christopher Court. A large amount of black smoke coming from the building was visible from two kilometres away.

Many of the residents had self-evacuated and a number of other people were given help to leave the building. There were no injuries to residents or emergency services personnel. Unfortunately, residents from the fourth floor were displaced for the night. Victim Services Wellington was on scene and provided support for all affected residents.

The fourth floor hallway was filled with smoke and there was high heat, extensive fire and no visibility in an apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished, but there was extensive fire, smoke and water damage to the apartment. Smoke was evacuated from the hallway, the fire unit as well as other apartments and stairwells.

Residents were displaced from the building for a few hours, but were then allowed to return to their apartments. Additional agencies on scene included Guelph Transit, Guelph Wellington Medical Service (GWEMS), Guelph Police Service (GPS) and Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and there is no estimate of damage at this time. A Guelph Fire Prevention officer was on scene and will be continuing the investigation later today.

On the July 22, 2016 at 1:14pm, Guelph Police were called to the south end of Guelph, where there was a report of a male asking people where he could buy a pipe to smoke drugs. Police were able to find the male and observed said male briefly enter into a store and leave. The male was spoken to by police with regards to his behaviour. As a result of this investigation, the male was arrested for possession of a controlled substance. A subsequent search revealed property that was hidden, on his person, which was from the store police observed him entering and exiting. This property was proven to be stolen. In total, the 35 year old Guelph male was charged with: theft under $5000, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of breaching his probation order and two counts of breaching his order of recognizance. He was held for a bail hearing.

On July 22, 2016 at 10:19pm, Guelph Police were called to the north end of Guelph, where there was a report of a male brandishing a knife. As a result of the investigation, Nathan Heinze, a 20 year old Guelph male, was arrested and charged with attempt robbery and weapons dangerous. He will be appearing in court on September 6, 2016.
