Another Serious Collision At Stop Sign Controlled Intersection

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Tuesday July 26, 2016, shortly before 2:30 p.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers, as well as personnel of the Stratford Police, Stratford Fire Dept., Twp. of Perth East Fire Dept. and Perth County EMS were dispatched to the intersection of Perth Road 112 and Line 29 (South of Stratford), for a serious two vehicle collision.

Investigation revealed that a Nissan Sentra was westbound on Line 29 when it entered the intersection directly in the path of a northbound Toyota Corolla. The Nissan was T-boned by the Toyota. The 29-year-old female driver of the Nissan, and the 34-year-old female passenger sustained major injuries. Both are Kitchener residents. The 75-year-old female driver of the Toyota, a Tavistock resident sustained minor injuries. All three injured persons were transported by land ambulance to a local hospital.

The driver of the Nissan has been charged with “fail to yield to traffic on through highway”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

This collision fits the mould of serious stop sign related crashes.

– It occurred at a busy intersection.

– The intersections had the non-through highway controlled by a stop sign.

– The through highways had a speed limit of 80 km/h.

– Occurred during daylight hours.

– Crash occurred while road and weather conditions were ideal.

– Crash resulted in injuries that were treated at a local hospital.

– The crash had the potential to be a fatal collision.

– The “at fault” driver was charged with “fail to yield to traffic on through highway”.

The OPP again urges motorists to pay attention to, and obey stop signs at stop sign controlled intersections. Remember intersections are locations where large numbers of serious and fatal collisions occur. Remember to STOP AND LOOK!
