ALPR Nabs Impaired Driver On London Road – Ashley KOHUT

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – A 36-year-old from Centralia is facing Impaired Driving and Drug Possession charges following a traffic stop that took place earlier this week.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2018 a Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was operating a police vehicle equipped with Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology when a Hyundai passed by travelling northbound on London Road. The investigating officer initiated a traffic stop after the ALPR device alerted him to an expired licence plate sticker on the vehicle.

Upon stopping the vehicle the officer had reason to believe there was cannabis marihuana inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in police seizing a quantity of cannabis marihuana.

Additionally, the investigating officer observed signs of impairment on the driver. A series of standard field sobriety tests were conducted which were failed by the driver. As a result the driver was placed under arrest and was transported to the Exeter OPP Detachment for further testing by a Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE). Upon completion of the DRE tests it was determined the driver was impaired by a drug.

As a result, 36-year-old Ashley KOHUT from Centralia has been charged with Driving While Impaired by a Drug, Possession of a Schedule II Substance – Cannabis Marihuana and Drive Motor Vehicle – No Validation on Plate. She has been released from custody with a court date scheduled for May 14, 2018 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich.

Her licence has been suspended for 90 days and her vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
