The Owen Sound Police Service is cautioning businesses to be wary following an attempted fraud by email that was reported Friday morning.
On Friday May 8th the assistant to the director of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery received an email that appeared to be from the Art Gallery Director. She was requested to wire a significant amount of money to an account located in California. The email appeared legitimate, but the assistant contacted the Director personally prior to completing the transaction.
A City of Owen Sound IT technician was called in to investigate and confirmed that the email address had been “spoofed” and would re-route to a different, untraceable address.
The Owen Sound Police Service is recommending that email requests for money transfers always be followed up in person.
