74 Year Old Falls Asleep At Wheel Causing 6 Vehicle Collision

(LISTOWEL, ON) – On August 9, 2019 at approximately 3:45 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Perth County detachment, Perth County Paramedic Services and Perth East Fire Department responded to the scene of a collision involving six motor vehicles.

The collision occurred on Perth Line 86, west of Road 135 in the Township of Perth East.

The male driver of a sedan traveling west on Line 86 fell asleep and struck 4 other vehicles traveling east on Line 86 and a bus traveling west on Line 86 transporting factory workers.

Only minor injuries were reported.

Jozef KIERYLO, 74-years-old of Waterloo was charged with Careless driving and issued a Provincial Offence Notice (PON).

Falling asleep at the wheel is a serious concern on our roads. In Canada, 20% of fatal collision are linked to driver fatigue and being tired slows your reaction time, decreases awareness and impairs judgement to a similar affect like alcohol or drugs.

Share driving with other passengers

Take frequent breaks

Keep the inside vehicle temperature on the cooler side, a warm vehicle can make you sleepy

Eat light meals and drink plenty of water, overeating can make you tired.
