(KINCARDINE, ON) – The South Bruce OPP will be using all available resources and personnel over the Labour Day weekend to crack down on aggressive drivers, those who drink and drive and those who fail to buckle up.
Detachment Commander Steve Porter wants everyone to enjoy the last long weekend of the summer, but do it safely. “We will be out in force this weekend on the highways, streets and waterways working to promote public safety. Leave plenty of time to get to your destination, wear your seatbelt and if you’re drinking, don’t driveâ€.
Anyone caught doing more than 50 kilometres over the posted speed limit will have their car impounded and license suspended for seven days on the spot. Since the street racing legislation was introduced, police services in Ontario have charged more than 5,000 motorists. The OPP will also be watching for those who fail to move over when passing an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the road with its emergency lights activated.
“Too many holiday weekends are remembered by a death on the highway or on the water†adds Porter. “Let’s work together to make this an enjoyable and, more importantly, a safe weekend for everyone.â€
