5 Year Old Killed In Hwy 10 Collision – Passenger Facing Criminal Negligence Causing Death Charge

(MUNICIPALITY OF GREY HIGHLANDS, ON) – Alex SILK, 20 years of age from Belleville, Ontario has been charged in connection to yesterday’s fatal collision on Hwy. 10 in the Municipality of Grey Highlands involving a 2005 Pontiac Montana mini-van and horse-drawn vehicle.

SILK, who was a passenger in the mini-van, is facing charges of Criminal Negligence Causing Death and three counts of Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm. He is in custody and scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on April 4, 2016.

There were nine persons in the horse-drawn vehicle at the time of the collision; four adults and five children ranging from 8 months to 5 years of age. A 5-year old girl, identified as Melinda BOWMAN, from the Municipality of Grey Highlands, was pronounced dead at the hospital. A post-mortem was conducted on the deceased today, April 4, 2016, in London.

A 26-year old female from the Township of Southgate was air lifted to hospital in Toronto where she is in critical condition.

The remaining seven occupants of the horse-drawn vehicle were treated at hospital and released.

The driver of the mini-van, a 60-year old male from Marmora and Lake, Ontario and the passenger received minor injuries.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), with the assistance of Collision Investigators from the OPP Highway Safety Division and West Region, and the OPP Forensic Identification Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Andy Raffay of the OPP Criminal Investigations Branch.
