5 MOTORCYLE COLLISIONS IN 13 DAYS – 4 FATAL / 1 CRITICAL

(LONDON, ON) – The West Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is raising a red flag to all four and two wheeled vehicle operators to drive safer. This warning comes after Middlesex OPP investigated a fatal collision today that killed a 4th motorcycle operator in less than two weeks.

OPP investigated motorcycle collisions on July 4, 6, 11, 13 and today. Two of the collisions were attributed to driver error on the part of motorcycle operator, while three were attributed to driver error on the part of the other driver. Regrettably, and regardless of who is at fault, drivers of motorcycles usually end up with serious injuries, or are killed during collisions.

Police are warning operators of all vehicles to be on the lookout for each other. Drivers of automobiles must take a few extra seconds to check their surroundings and look for motorcycle drivers. Checking your mirrors and blind spots frequently will help to ensure safe travels.

Drivers of motorcycles must drive safely and defensively. Operators should always anticipate the actions of other drivers and never assume that other drivers are aware of their presence. Anticipating the driving actions of another vehicle and planning an escape route are essential safe driving techniques for all motorcycle drivers. Riders should always look well down the road for other motorists or objects on the roadway and be extra careful approaching all intersections.

New riders are well advised to take a motorcycle safety training course before ever venturing out onto the roadways.
