(PERTH COUNTY, ON) – Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to numerous collisions over the weekend. Between 9 p.m. on Friday January 08, and 6 a.m. on Monday January 11, 2016, officers attended to 31 collisions.
On Friday and Saturday there were seven fog related crashes involving drivers who were travelling too fast, were making U turns, having improper or no lights, and passing when visibility was poor.
One of these crashes involved a delivery truck driver who entered the round-about on Hwy 7 from Oxford Road 19 early Saturday morning at a high rate of speed in the fog. The driver was unable to negotiate the round-about and drove approximately 300m into a field. The uninjured 26-year-old male driver from Etobicoke was charged with “careless driving”.
Saturday evening around 7:30 p.m. in extremely foggy conditions, a 21-year-old female from Norfolk County made a U turn on Hwy 8 west of Shakespeare and collided with a pickup truck. No injuries were reported but damage to the two pickup trucks was extensive. The Norfolk resident was charged with “turn not in safety”.
The remaining 24 collisions involved motorists who left roadways in snowy and icy conditions. Three vehicles entered ditches what were filled with water causing much of the vehicles to be submerged. While the rest slid into fields. No serious injuries were reported as a result of these crashes.
The Perth County OPP wants to remind motorists that although they cannot control the road or weather conditions, they can control the vehicle they are driving. Electronic traction control, all-wheel drive and snow tires will all help to maintain control of your vehicle, but the safest way to drive in winter is to reduce your speed. Remember that an ordinary driver reacts to the changing road and weather conditions, while a good driver anticipates problems before they occur. Slow down, stay alert, stay in control and arrive safely at your destination.
