28 Distracted Drivers Caught In 12 Hours – $7,840 In Tickets Issued

(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) On Thursday March 19, 2015, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers, as part of the province wide “Distracted Driving Campaign” set up to observe the actions of motorists on Wallace Ave North, across from the North Perth OPP Detachment in Listowel. The officers were there off and on, for a period of 12 hours. To their disappointment, they observed a disturbing high number of blatant distraction violations.

A total of 28 motorists were issued tickets for disregarding the law pertaining to the use of electronic devices while operating motor vehicles. Each of these drivers received a $280 ticket.

“I am absolutely shocked that within meters of our OPP Detachment window, we see such blatant disregard of the law. How important can these texts, calls or messages be that drivers have to handle their devices while driving, especially near a busy intersection and the Listowel downtown? It is also upsetting to realize that these drivers are just the tip of the iceberg. While the officers were dealing with these violators, other motorists saw this and quickly put away their devices”. Sgt. Mike Scott, Perth County OPP, Listowel Detachment

The province wide “Distracted Driving Campaign” will continue until midnight tonight, however regular enforcement of the distracted driving laws will continue upon the completion of the campaign.
