(PERTH COUNTY, ON) – On Sunday night, March 20th, the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) wrapped up its week long OPP Distracted Driving Campaign. The campaign, which was part of the province wide OPP Distracted Driving Campaign resulted in a large number of drivers being charged for texting or talking on a cell phone while driving.
Studies that have been conducted confirm that this behaviour is as dangerous as driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Perth County OPP officers, although busy with increased calls for service due to March Break and Paddyfest activities, still actively participated in the Distracted Driving Campaign. A total of 27 drivers were issued tickets for disregarding the law pertaining to the use of electronic devices while operating motor vehicles. Each of these drivers received a $490 ticket and in addition, upon conviction will see three demerit points added to their licence. One motorist was also charged with careless driving during the campaign period.
“It is difficult to understand why these texts, calls or messages have to be answered while operating motor vehicles. When behind the wheel attention should be on the task at hand which is driving. I will urge our officers to continue road safety and enforcement in an effort to keep roadways in Perth County safe. It is my hope that this campaign and our “Easter Long Weekend Spring Seat Belt Campaign” will create greater road safety awareness”. Inspector Rob Scott, Detachment Commander Perth County OPP
