On April 21, 2015, at approximately 9:40 a.m., members of the Owen Sound Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit observed a suspicious Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle near downtown Owen Sound. The officers learned that the plates for the motorcycle were unauthorized and requested the assistance of uniform patrol to further investigate the motorcycle and female rider. The marked cruiser attempted to stop the motorcycle in the 1100 Block of 1st Avenue East, using emergency lights and siren, however the motorcycle immediately accelerated in an attempt to evade police. The attempt to purse the motorcycle was quickly terminated due to safety concerns. The rider was observed disobeying a red traffic signal at 10th Street and 1st Avenue West and fled westbound on 10th Street out of the city at high speed, weaving in and out of traffic.
Through further investigation by members of the Owen Sound Drug Unit later located the motorcycle and the driver in Wiarton. Chantel LAUDA, 23 years of Elmwood was taken into custody and charged criminally with Dangerous Driving, Flight from Police and two counts of Driving while Disqualified. Lauda was held in custody for a bail hearing. The motorcycle which was not properly registered was seized and impounded.
