Off duty Saugeen Shores Police officer assists with water rescue

On Tuesday, July 26th, 2016, at 2:23 pm, Saugeen Shores Police, Fire and Ambulance responded to the beach near Gobles Grove in Port Elgin for a report of three swimmers in distress.

Off duty Saugeen Shores Police officer PC Fletcher observed three people approximately 100m -150m off shore unable to swim in due to the high waves and windy conditions.

By the time PC Fletcher began his swim out with the aid of a floatation device the two brothers (in their late teens) managed to make their way in, however their sister (20yrs) was still struggling against the waves. She was holding onto an inflatable pool toy which was flopping about in the wind hindering her ability to swim.

PC Fletcher reached her and assisted her to shore to awaiting police, fire and ambulance. All refused medical attention.

This is a good time to remind motorists to pull over and stop when you see police, fire and ambulance approaching or coming up behind you with their emergency lights activated. Always remember a flashing green light means a volunteer fire fighter is trying to respond to an emergency as well. The life they could be trying to save may be someone you know.
