$20 Patch Job To Cost Winghamites $3,570 – Still Believe There Is No Corruption?

At the last council meeting it was revealed the Wingham Police station roof leaked during the last big storm with high winds. The roof is currently asphalt shingles, no valleys and about 6 vents, finding the point of infiltration should be very easy compared to virtually any other roof.

A couple tubes of “wet patch” would likely have fixed the leak, something one of North Huron’s 120+ staff should be capable of doing. Worst case, a couple shingles need to be replaced. This should have been looked after during an annual roof inspection by town staff, which likely never happens.

It should be noted that Reeve Neil Vincent did question the very high cost of the proposed roof remedies. WFP contacted a Mennonite roofing company that does a lot of work in Wingham and Area to see what it would cost to put steel on the Police Station. Typically it costs $3,000 to $5,000 to put a steel roof on a house, depending on size etc. The estimate was under well under $10,000 for material and labor to put steel on the Police Station roof, and it could be done by the end of the week.

But, this is Wingham.

Town staff are recommending spending $3,570 just to patch the leak(s) on the police station roof, that is more than it costs to put steel on an average house. Most property managers can easily handle patching a leak for less than $20 for a couple tubes of wet patch, but this is Wingham and it is going to cost taxpayers close to $3,570. Then they are going to spend an insane amount to put steel on the roof in the spring, to cover up the $4,000 patch job.

From the Agenda Package:

Wingham Police Station Roof The Wingham Police station roof will receive a patch repair in the next couple weeks. Beldman Construction has been hired to repair the area where water is penetrating the roof. The cost of the repair is $3,570. This price includes the rental of equipment to access the roof (lift). After assessment and discussions with contractors, the option to replace the roof, at this time of year, was not feasible. The options left was to do nothing or patch. It was decided to patch in order to mitigate further interior damage.
