20 Charges Laid In Commercial Motor Vehicle Blitz

Officers with the York Regional Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Unit and the #3 District Community Oriented Response Unit partnered with the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Environment and the South Simcoe Police to conduct a one-day commercial motor vehicle inspection blitz on Wednesday, June 21, 2016 in the Town of Georgina.

During the blitz, 36 commercial motor vehicles were inspected. Of these, 12, or 33 per cent, were taken off the road based on defects or safety violations. Provincial Offence Notices were issued for 20 various commercial motor vehicle violations under the Highway Traffic Act, including insecure loads, improper tires, improper braking systems and documentation violations.

Drivers and operators of commercial motor vehicles are responsible for ensuring that their vehicles are safe and any loads are secure before being operated on any road. Any defect that compromises the safe operation of a vehicle can result in it being rendered unsafe and the license plates may be removed. A commercial motor vehicle inspector has the option of holding a vehicle until the defect is repaired or immediately removing the license plates.

York Regional Police is committed to road safety through education and enforcement of commercial motor vehicle safety laws. Strong partnerships with other agencies continue to enhance the effectiveness of these initiatives.
