York Regional Police removed 18 impaired drivers from our roadways in a seven-day period.
Fourteen male drivers and four female drivers were charged with impaired-related driving offences between Monday, November 13, 2017, and Monday, November 20, 2017. Thirteen drivers were charged for being impaired by alcohol, three drivers were charged with being impaired by drugs and two drivers were charged for failing to provide a breath sample. Nine of those drivers were stopped by officers conducting general patrol or at R.I.D.E. spot checks, six drivers were arrested after being involved in collisions and nine impaired drivers were stopped as a result of calls from concerned citizens.
On Saturday, November 18, 2017, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers responded to multi-vehicle collision in the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive West and Jane Street in the City of Vaughan. When officers arrived, they found three vehicles had collided with one another and one of the drivers was no longer on scene. Witnesses advised that following the collision, the driver of the vehicle that had struck them walked away from the scene. A short time later officers located the driver who was walking north on Jane Street. He was placed under arrest and taken to #4 District for a breath test, where he blew more than twice the legal limit.

York Regional Police is not giving up.
Our continued efforts to prevent senseless death and injury on our roads includes educating students and our community on ways to avoid impaired driving, including this festive season’s campaign: Don’t go Along for the R.I.D.E.
The York Regional Police R.I.D.E. program is a year-long initiative that is enhanced during the festive season. York Regional Police urges all drivers to take proactive measures if drinking by arranging for overnight accommodations, appointing a designated driver, taking a cab or using public transit.
The message is clear: DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL OR USE DRUGS AND DRIVE.
York Regional Police thanks the citizens who chose to make the right decision this weekend to not drink and drive. We also want to thank the members of the community for helping us stop and arrest impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1 through the Safe Roads…Your Call program. We consider these incidents a life-threatening crime in progress and will continue to respond to these calls.
