(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) – On Friday May 20, 2016, Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers arrested a 62 year old male motorist in Milverton who displayed signs of impairment. Further investigation revealed that the male was impaired by drugs. The male was subsequently charged with “driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle (drug).
Within a week of this incident, on Friday May 27th around 3 p.m., a Perth County OPP officer on patrol along Perth Line 86 East of Listowel observed a sedan drifting onto the shoulder of the roadway. The officer conducted a traffic stop and while speaking with the male driver signs of impairment were noted. The odour of burnt marihuana was also detected inside the vehicle.
The seventeen-year-old male driver was placed under arrest for impaired driving by drug. He was transported to the North Perth OPP Detachment in Listowel, where he was evaluated by an officer who is a qualified Drug Recognition Expert.
As a result of this evaluation the male, a Mapleton Twp. resident has been charged with “driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle (drug), contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
Marihuana was located inside the vehicle. As a result the driver also faces a charge of “possession of a schedule II substance – Cannabis Marihuana – under 30 grams”, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The seventeen year old youth was released on a Promise to Appear. He will have to attend in front of the Youth Justice Court Judge in Listowel on June 22, 2016, to answer to these charges.
