(BURLINGTON, ON) – Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Highway Safety Division, Highway 407 Detachment investigated a commercial motor vehicle complaint that resulted in Tobacco Tax Act charges.
On August 29, 2024 at approximately 10:45 pm a Ministry of Transportation, Transportation Enforcement Officer conducted a traffic stop of a commercial motor vehicle for not having a toll transponder on Highway 407 westbound, west of Appleby Line in Burlington.
Officers from the OPP’s Highway 407 Detachment were called to assist with the investigation. Under the authority of the Tobacco Tax Act, officers searched the commercial motor vehicle and located 3.6 million unmarked cigarettes. The cigarettes were not marked or stamped with valid legal identification.
As a result of the investigation Ioannis FTHENOS, a 33-year-old male from Stoney Creek was charged with:
- Possession of unmarked cigarettes for sale
- Possession of unmarked cigarettes under the Tobacco Tax Act.Â
- Drive motor vehicle – improper licence
- No toll device
He is scheduled to answer to the charges in the Burlington courthouse on November 18, 2024.
